m97 Gallery, one of Shanghai’s first dedicated international contemporary photography galleries, will have its opening exhibition on March 3, 2007 running through April 11, 2007. The opening reception will take place on Saturday March 3rd from 4pm to 7pm at the new gallery space located at No. 97 Moganshan Road, 2nd Floor.
m97 Gallery aims to enrich the already active Shanghai gallery and art community by exhibiting both international and Chinese artists working with photography. Spanning the various genres of photography from portraiture to conceptual photography to documentary photography, m97 Gallery will provide a platform for photographic-based artists that are working in China or addressing China-related issues in their work.

m97 Gallery’s first exhibition will showcase the work of Beijing-based artist Jiang Zhi. Jiang’s series of large-scale photographs entitled “Things Would Turn Simpler Once They Happened” speak of the individual’s hopes and desires that something unexpected and beyond their control should come and bring change to their otherwise ordinary life. “In this age of changes, people expect something to happen to them,” says artist Jiang Zhi, “something that throws light on them like a spotlight. Everything then will become simpler, more beautiful and endurable. They are waiting for their lives to be changed by this ‘something’ permanently. Religion, love, wealth, opportunity, whatever should fall upon us is welcomed, as long as it can rescue us from the ordinary repetition of daily life.”
