Yu Ji’s fictional landscapes unite China’s ubiquitous contrasts of new and old with psycho-sexual symbolism. Employing a cinematic mode of image construction, the artist pairs notions of fertility and virtual sex to create an unrealistic narrative. Set against Sichuan’s barren territory, rife with traditional architecture and new construction, Yu Ji’s mise en scène brings incident, prop and character into a surrealist alliance.
