Wang Ningde’s "Someday" series is some of the most iconic work to come out of the Chinese contemporary photography scene in the last decade. Resembling film stills of a sedate noir fantasy whereby childhood memory, fear, and reverie are folded into the serene trappings of an anonymous historical past, these works have the effect of a reoccurring daydream. Starting out as a news photographer in Guangdong, Wang captured the tragedy and drama of everyday life. In this extreme departure from the stark realism of the everyday news beat, the artist presents a fictitious narrative of his own subconscious someday. Wang’s Someday series has been exhibited and collected by important institutions worldwide.
