1.Tree of Man
人类之树

Mao Yu’s Tree of Man series takes place on the outskirts of the ancient capital of Xian, a city that this Heilongjiang artist now calls home. Blending the teachings of Confucian sages with the tenets of Buddhism, the eleven tableaus in this series describe Man’s spiritual and corporeal evolution. A red ribbon, representing a universal human bloodline as well as the tree of life, nature and regeneration conjoin the series. The artist himself plays the main role in these universal allegories of birth, life, death and rebirth. Coming from a background in printmaking and painting, this is Mao Yu’s gripping foray into the realm of performative photography.
