Bai Yiluo, once employed as a studio portraitist, uses the indexical identity photograph as a motif to express the difficulty of an individual to emerge from the mass. Thousands of head portraits arranged as a huge montage become people-scapes. These fields of China’s everyman are overlayed with images that speak of commonality, mortality, and transcendence.
